Time Frame

Students will have mastered the following:

September – June

Skills are developed, practiced and expanded upon from one grade to the next, as each year the texts and materials increase in complexity.


Honors and Academy classes will acquire the same skills using more complex texts and with more independence.




By the end of each course, students will be able to:


1. Cite textual evidence to support analysis of grade-specific texts


2. Recognize and analyze themes or central ideas of grade-specific texts


3. Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).


4. Determine the meanings of words and phrases are used in texts, including figurative and connotative meanings


5. Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning.


6. Analyze how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text.


7. Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium (e.g., lighting, sound, color, or

camera focus and angles in a film).


8. Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history.


9. By the end of the year, read and comprehend grade -specific literature, including stories, dramas, poems and literary non-fiction



By the end of each course, students will be able to:


1. Write persuasive essays on substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence and following standards of writing style, structure, and grammar.


2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of content, following standards of writing style, structure, and grammar.


3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences and following standards of writing style, structure, and grammar.


4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific).


5. Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. (Editing for grade-specific conventions).


6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback, including new arguments or information.


7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question or solve a problem;synthesize multiple sources on the subject from authoritative print and digital sources.


8. integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.


9. Draw evidence form literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.


10. Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of grade- specific tasks, purposes and audiences.




By the end of each course, students will be able to:


1. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on grade-specific topics with diverse partners


2. Analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse media and formats


3. Delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.


4. Present claims and findings, emphasizing points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and

examples; use appropriate eye contact, adequate

volume, and clear pronunciation.


5. Include use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) to enhance presentations.




By the end of each course, students will be able to:


1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.


2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.


3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.


4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade- specific reading and content.


5. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings based on grade- specific reading and content.


6. Acquire and use accurately grade-specific academic words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
